Salt Lake City
September 26, 2025 – January 3, 2026
Opening reception Friday, September 26, 6–9 PM
The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, in partnership with the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation, presents the 2025 Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting awarded to Portland-based artist Elizabeth Malaska. This biennial prize includes a $15,000 unrestricted cash award and a solo exhibition at UMOCA.
Malaska’s layered, emotionally resonant paintings explore themes of protection, vulnerability, and transformation. Drawing from mythology, nature, and the human form, her works merge contemporary techniques with symbolic and dreamlike imagery. By blending figures, symbols, and mythological elements with varied paint treatments, she creates collaged textures that invite reflection on identity, strength, and tenderness.
Malaska, a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Betty Bowen Award recipient, has exhibited widely and her works are held in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, and others. Her recognition with the Doctorow Prize underscores her role as a leading voice in contemporary painting.
