Robert Fuerer (b. 1977) is a Swiss-born American artist whose multicultural journey profoundly informs his creative practice. Fluent in Mandarin and shaped by years living and working in both Asia and North America, Fuerer brings a unique cross-cultural lens to his work. He draws inspiration from the urban vitality of cities and the quiet resilience of rural landscapes, capturing both in oil paintings and multimedia pieces that explore memory, place, and identity.
Educated at the State University of New York’s School of Art & Design at Purchase College, where he earned a BFA in Oil Painting in 2009, Fuerer developed a foundation as a contemporary “flâneur”—an observant wanderer who records the world’s poetry and tension through art. Since then, he has made a living as a full-time artist, expressing daily gratitude to God for the opportunity to support his family through his creative work.
In recent years, Fuerer has gained attention for a series of innovative button paintings—meticulously crafted portraits of iconic women from art history, created entirely from antique buttons. What began with a tin of his grandmother’s buttons has grown into a profound body of work exploring femininity, labor, and legacy. Each piece transforms forgotten, utilitarian objects into richly textured mosaics that reimagine masterpieces from Da Vinci to Klimt.
Currently based in Utah, Fuerer continues to explore themes of cultural hybridity, spiritual reflection, and the power of the handmade. His work can be found in public and private collections worldwide, including exhibitions throughout the United States and Asia. With each piece—whether oil on canvas or button on board—Fuerer invites viewers to slow down, look closer, and rediscover wonder in the materials and memories that surround us.
