At times we have a disconnect with writing: we believe writing exists within an unseen, made-up world. But Ashley Brown’s writing begs to differ.
A Pleasant Grove native, Brown spent her formative years exploring the mountains and trails of the Wasatch Front. This had a profound effect on her, and her writing has always had a single constant—her love and admiration for nature. She has worked professionally as a Utah-based freelance journalist for more than ten years, exploring Utah’s outdoor lifestyle in magazines like Park City Adventure Guide, Park City Home Magazine, Visit Park City, TownLift News, Neighbors of Park City, PCstyles Magazine, and Backcountry Magazine. Brown’s writing is interesting because it is so present and connected with the world around her. It’s writing that reminds us about the world outside, and shows how we don’t have to disconnect ourselves from the world to write engaging content.
In 2023, in collaboration with Mountaineers Books, she published Urban Trails: Salt Lake City, a guide book about famous trails around Salt Lake City that encourages readers to go and experience these trails themselves. Her writing not only shows her own love of nature, but is an invitation for readers to go out and form their own connections with nature.
In addition to her journalistic work, Brown expresses her love and fascination with the outside world through poetry, some of which she shares with us today.
If you enjoy Brown’s writing, consider picking up her book, or checking out any of the magazines in which Brown is featured. She is currently working along with Visit Park City on an Accessibility series.
